The why's of what we do

A Sura Detox is about much more than just food and nutrition. Why do we make the choices that we do ? Why do we lead lives that have stress, exploitation and unconsciousness built-in by design ? Over the years we have built up a library of information and articles about food, nutrition, why we lead the lives that we do, and some pointers and guidance if you want to make changes. Our aim is to support you in making conscious choices about how you lead you life.

What those choices are is up to you. We have no interest in coercing you to adopt our views. You don't need to become a vegan or vegetarian, you won't become a 'better' person if you meditate every day or run a weekly marathon. What we love is to stimulate your interest in yourself; re-awakening your curiosity and enthusiasm to learn and to explore.

Why Detox? 

These days the word detox is used to sell anything from seaweed baths to fragrant tea. It's a term that has become very diluted and stretched, so how are you supposed to know what you’re getting for your money? 

Biologically, the word detox points to processes that go on all the time, but as a practice, it is most strongly associated with the liver, immune system and eliminative channels of the body. Water fasting is the most effective and ancient means of switching on the body’s natural capacity to detox, and we offer juice options to make the process more manageable.

Something amazing happens when we reduce our food intake. Something wonderful and enlightening. Something that can happen at no other time, precisely because we are otherwise full of food. As the bodily systems associated with digestion slow and stop, our mental, emotional and nervous systems calm and drop too, and influences of different parts of our psyche are revealed. This alone can be quite enlightening.

Despite scientific leaps forward in understanding the complexities of digestion, all in the know admit, we are barely scratching the surface. When we had isolated the first 10 nutrients - vitamins and minerals, we postulated that there would be around 100 to the whole picture. Now that we can number nutrients in their thousands, we are assessing that there are millions more to find.

For digestion is indeed a complex business, involving not only the secretions of the body, and utilising the inherent chemistry of the cells we are eating, but also the processes of the millions of microbes that populate the gut. Poking around in the dark, our sciences uncover ever greater co-evolutions, and more intimate relationships and dependencies between the forces at work, and prove, ever more clearly how this dance of influences remains far beyond our comprehension.

Much like the caterpillar that regresses to soup inside the chrysalis, food goes in, melts into its constituents, and somehow, miraculously rebuilds into the butterfly of the human form.

Of course, there are tried and tested methods for making this happen smoothly, and there are situations that are not conducive to it, so even without understanding the intricacies, we can see ways that have worked for millions of years, and how quickly they have changed in modern times - the symptoms are everywhere.

Historically, water fasting is found in all traditions, and has a time-tested track record for enhancing physical health, as well as mental well-being. However, in our comfort-oriented society, a water-only fast, seems like a bit of a stretch for most people, so we primarily offer juice fasts.
But water fasting is what its all about really.

We have always encouraged our guests to drink as little juice as they can, to explore the limits of their comfort zone, and move as close to water fasting as they dare.

Water fasting takes one much deeper into the underbelly of our emotions, and can propel us through the lows of despair, and into the heights of spacious bliss.

While the body is happy to take full advantage of the complete break from digestion, the mind can find it a hard place to be, so we do present this option with some caution, as it is not for everyone. Our guests often return year after year until they are comfortable with juice fasting, before they switch to a water fast.

However, over the years, we have seen a growing number of people looking for a safe place to do a water fast, and we are more than happy to manage this for those willing to go deep.

Juice Fasting

Even though our retreats are advertised as juice fasts, we encourage people to drink as much water as possible during the week, as it is the water that acts as a means of carrying toxins from the system.

The herbals teas don’t necessarily detract from this, but their real role is only to bring some variety to the experience.  

We have been encouraging people to drink as little juice as they can get by, based upon the principle that as less nutrients & energy come in, the body switches to other forms of nourishment, and has to drill into it’s own fat reserves & toxin stores to get what it needs. Therefore the less juice, the deeper the cleanse.

But each person needs to be happy with their overall energy levels, and feel safe with the emotions that arise throughout the fast, so each person is managed differently.

But everyone is given the same mantra to adhere to

If you’re thirsty, drink water

If you’re not thirsty, drink water

If you don’t know if you’re thirsty or not - drink water

We provide glass water bottles for everyone, but if you have your own, bring a water bottle to carry around with you at all times.

Culture Shift

As the cultural acceptance of fasting has widened, the number of our guests moving to a water fast has escalated.

In the last year or so, since an explosion of fasting research has made the idea of ‘intermittent fasting’ popular, and brought the subject of fasting generally to the public’s attention, around half of each group will move swiftly and easily to a water fast.

So, if you are looking to explore the possibility of a water fast, you will not be alone in doing so.

 And it is always clear that those prepared to go the deepest, will come up the shiniest at the end of the week.
